Man gets DUI after operating Amish horse and buggy

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Police say a Sigel man is facing drunk driving charges after reportedly operating an Amish horse and buggy in a “reckless manner.”

According to the Brookville Police Department, 20-year-old Ray Byler faces a misdemeanor driving under the influence and was also cited for careless and reckless driving.

Police say they were patrolling the area of Main Street Sunday when they passed an Amish horse and buggy.

While some may find this story funny, it is not funny at all for Mr. Byler.  He now faces fines, licenses suspension and jail time.  He can expect higher car insurance rates and difficulty finding a job. His name is all over the internet so he will live with this for the rest of his life.

The fact of the matter is, whether the DUI occurs on a buggy, a bicycle or in a car, the penalties are the same and so are the long term effects. Unfortunately, the law doesn’t consider that in a buggy he probably wasn’t much of a harm to anyone. Therefore, this citizen will have to pay for the long term costs for this DUI the same as someone who was drunk and driving on the highway endangering everyone around them.

Hopefully this case will fall into the hands of a judge who uses some common sense or he has a really good attorney to defend his case.
