What to know about York County prosecutions
The preliminary hearings are by and large held at the individual Magisterial District Judge’s offices. After the preliminary hearing, if the charges are not dismissed, the case continues at the York County Courthouse. It is a beautiful, modern and expensive building. It has a large indoor open space in the middle of the building going up all of the floors. The York County DA’s office and the probation office are in the building. The best place to park is in a parking garage. The meter maids can be very aggressive when they know court is in session.
York County prosecutions are divided up among the few judges who sit and hear criminal cases. Once a judge is assigned to your case, that is the judge for the life of your case. Some are more pro-prosecution. Some are more pro-defendant. Also, your case will be assigned to a particular DA or Deputy DA who will handle your case once it comes up to the courthouse. Unless it is serious charges, the DA and DDA who may have been at the preliminary hearing may not be the one who handles it at the Court of Common Pleas. This is why it is vital to get any deal in writing. A lot of attorneys without the local experience make this mistake.
