Joshua Grimes was a “desperate man” when he tried to run down a state trooper during a police chase in Cumberland County in November, a prosecutor said as Grimes’ trial began in county court today.

Grimes, 27, of Lower Frankford Township, was shot as he backed his Ford Explorer toward the trooper, who had forced Grimes’ vehicle off the road, Chief Deputy District Attorney Michelle Sibert told the jury. She said that Grimes, who faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, deliberately endangered the officer.

Defense Attorney Tim Barrouk said Grimes didn’t know the officer was back there. The aggravated assault charge is baseless because Grimes wasn’t trying to hurt anyone and just wanted to flee, Barrouk said.

The 10-minute chase, which hit speeds of 90 mph, began when Grimes fled a drunken driving stop, police said.

Grimes spent more than a month in Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center after being shot.

Testimonials

Justin is one of the greatest DUI lawyers in the country. His litigation skills are top notch, and his knowledge of DUI literature is off the charts. Anyone lucky enough to have Justin McShane as his or her attorney in a DUI case has one of the greatest DUI warriors to be had in the battle.

- Attorney Evan M. Levow

Justin brings a yearning to succeed to the table as a criminal defense attorney. He trains himself and his staff attorneys at the highest level to be ready to attack any flaw in the State’s case or any prevarication by a police officer who guesses that Justin will not have found the “smoking gun” in the case. This pride of preparation is not something that can be taught to a trial lawyer —- it is self-generated. Justin has earned my endorsement through hard work and dogged determination to be the best attorney in Pennsylvania.

- Attorney William Head, Atlanta GA

I was treated with respect. Not only by Attorney Barrouk, but by all staff I interacted with. I was kept informed and all options [were] thoroughly discussed with me. [Attorney Barrouk] fought to get the best resolution of my case. I did not feel he was “just going through the motions.”

- DM, Harrisburg
