HARRISBURG, Pa. —The city of Harrisburg will be in court this week trying to defend against an attempt to suspend the city’s gun laws.

Attorneys for U.S. Law Shield will be in Dauphin County court Friday.

They were the first organization to file suit against Harrisburg and will be asking a judge for a preliminary injunction to suspend Harrisburg’s gun laws.

City lawyers will fight the request for a preliminary injunction as well as two separate lawsuits that came about after the state legislature and Gov. Tom Corbett allowed anyone to challenge local gun laws.

The city argues the gun laws for Harrisburg are reasonable and protect citizens.

“We’re not here to argue whether they’re a good idea or a bad idea,” Mike Giaramita of U.S. Law Shield said. “We’re arguing that they were enacted improperly and that the city doesn’t have the authority to do so under state law.”

City councilman Brad Koplinski believes the city has a duty to fight back against any change in its laws even temporarily.

Harrisburg is joining with other cities including Lancaster asking commonwealth court to strike down the recent state law that gives anyone, anywhere the right to sue cities in Pennsylvania that have enacted their own gun laws.
